Weighted Companion Cube Papercraft

October 30, 2007

Weighted Companion Cube

Hey Portal fans!  Time to make your very own Weighted Companion Cube.  There are a few type available, like the one above from Moony on /po/ and this one from Ted Fallenger on /po/.  Ted even make a model for a regular Weighted Storage Cube, but it’s not nearly as cute and lovable.

The Enrichment Center reminds you that the weighted companion cube will never threaten to stab you and, in fact, cannot speak. In the event the Weighted Companion Cube does speak, the Enrichment Center urges you to disregard its advice.

Game Impressions #2: Portal

October 27, 2007

Portal

Introduction

Portal is a small game included in The Orange Box by Valve. Three to five hours tops from start to finish, not counting all the achievements you can get with the Xbox 360 version. But it might be worth buying The Orange Box all by itself…

Dumbledore is Gay

October 22, 2007

Dumbledore

The internet buzz reached a fevered pitch last Friday, and Harry Potter fans were apparently blindsided, by J.K. Rowling’s revelation that Hogwart’s headmaster Albus Dumbledore is gay

From the perspective of one who has never read a single sentence in a Harry Potter book, or watched any Harry Potter movies, my official response is… so what.  Apparently his sexuality was never discussed in the novels.  Isn’t that how society is supposed to behave??  If homosexuals, or minority groups for that matter, have once common mantra, it’s that all they want is to not be singled out, but rather to be treated for who they are as a person, not by their sexuality or the color of their skin or whatever.

But then we are constantly barraged by stereotypes in our society.  Some are just plain wrong, like how you can get AIDS by kissing a homosexual.  Some lead to more division and separation in an attempt to be equal, like the Miss Black America Pageant.  So here we finally have a character that lasted through all the Harry Potter novels and was not once pigeon-holed into one stereotypical category.  Isn’t that how the world is supposed to be?  I haven’t seen one comment or story about this revelation mention that this is how things should be.  Which is sad.

The Sword and Laser

October 18, 2007

Veronica Belmont, formerly of Buzz Out Loud fame and now working on a new show for Mahalo, has started up a new online sci-fi/fantasy book club called The Sword and Laser. Check it out at swordandlaser.com.

I don’t read as much as I used to, although I buy just as many books as I used to, resulting in an ever-increasing pile of books “to be read.” I think I’m going to give this club a try. It might get me back into reading more. The first book chosen for the club to read and discuss is The Golden Compass by Philip Pullman.

Star Wars Live Action TV Show is Reality

October 17, 2007

Star Wars

Looks like Star Wars really is coming to your TV screen, and I don’t mean by videogame.  The long-rumored live action TV show appears to officially be happening, according to George Lucas.  It’s being produced by Rick McCallum, who did the excellent The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles series.  Could be good….
