Free Time

December 31, 2008

leap2nd

Who doesn’t enjoy a little free time? Well, today you’re gonna get it. At 11:59:59 Universal Time (6:59:59pm EST), atomic clocks around the work will add one “leap second” to the day.  The last one was December 31, 2005.  Do you remember what you were doing when it happened??  No??  Well, make plans now to make the most of it!  Enjoy it! Don’t be all doom and gloom like some naysayers!  Make it a joyful and memorable experience.  You’ll be glad you did.

Frozen Zune, Anyone?

December 31, 2008

zuneLooks like some Zune lovers woke up to a surprise this morning.  Apparently, at 2am this morning, every 30GB Zune on the planet crashed at the same time.  Froze up.  When they’re rebooted, they just display a loading bar.  Oops.  Some are calling it Y2K9.  Too funny.  Sounds like something out of a sci-fi movie.  “The first sign was when all the Zune’s froze.  But no one realized the significance, and what it meant to the fate of humanity….”

Zark’s Top 10 Games (I Wish I Played) in 2008

December 31, 2008

wishingwellAt the end of previous years, I published my Top 10 list of videogames for the year.  This list was always based on games I actually played very far through or finished, not just a list based on what IGN or Gamespot or Kotaku say were the best games of the year.  This put me in a bit of a quandry for 2008, as I’ve just not had the time I’d like to have had to play through many games.  So this year, I decided to mix it up a bit and do my Top 10 List of Games I Wish I Played.  I do have the distinction of owning every single one of these games… my desire outstripes my free time!

Honorable mentions: Fallout 3 (played until I left the Vault), Fable 2 (made it to Bowerstone in Chapter 3), De Blob (free t-shirt!), Star Wars: The Force Unleashed (got the Wii and 360 versions), Dead Space (watched the DVD and read the comic), Braid (played some of the demo), Prince of Persia (limited edition with pre-order), Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (first full price PS3 game purchase), Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia (I hear it’s brutally hard), Mirror’s Edge (reading the comic monthly), and Okami (got my replacement game sleeves).

And now, the top 10….

Calvin & Hobbes vs Nostradamus

December 30, 2008

calvin

This strip has been circulating around for the past couple of days.  You mainly see people attribute it to being 15 years old, but I haven’t found an actual date for it.  Given that Bill Watterson published the last Calvin and Hobbes strip 13 years ago tomorrow, the 15 year attribution could be correct.  In any case, it sure echoes the financial crisis of recent days.

I miss Calvin and Hobbes.  What a good strip.

Hey!  Shamless plug… don’t forget you can subscribe to my RSS feed.  I don’t mention it very often, and sometimes people are surprised when they realize they can.

MSI Wind Unboxing

December 28, 2008

So… I mentioned last week about how I hadn’t really bought into the whole netbook craze, mainly because Apple doesn’t make a netbook (yet).  But I have always wanted a second computer at my desk, to stream a video, run chat, pull up info while playing WoW, or whatever.  My desk area isn’t that big, however, to have two big monitors, or even have a normal sized MacBook.  When I found out that some people have been hacking netbooks to run Mac OS X, my interest perked up considerably.

Papercraft Friday #21: Link and Zelda

December 26, 2008

How about ending the year with a blast from the past!  This week I chose two models that go well together: Link (from the N64 game The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask) and Princess Zelda (from the N64 game The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time).  Keep Hyrule safe for the new year by building these two classic  gaming icons.  Thanks to Ninjatoes for the models.  May the Triforce be with you.
