Doctor Who Theme on Guitar

May 26, 2010

The original 1963 Doctor Who theme by Delia Derbyshire, recreated by Bill Ruppert using just a guitar and some Electro-Harmonix pedals.  Pretty cool.

Need a little reference?  Here’s a video of the opening sequence:

and the full classic theme (audio only):

NASA Orion Pad Abort-1 Test Successful

May 6, 2010

Grats to NASA on a very successful test of the Orion crew capsule’s launch abort system.  Unfortunately the future of the Orion crew capsule, part of NASA’s Constellation program (I mentioned previously) that Obama scrapped earlier this year, is still up in the air.  The U.S. has never had to use a launch abort system for its astronauts so far, but the Russians have had to twice.  Even though the administration hasn’t got its act together in Washington with regards to space funding and direction, it’s good to see NASA pushing forward on future astronaut safety.

Papercraft Friday #82: McDonald’s Big America

April 16, 2010

When I saw this post on Papercraft Paradise, I had to stop and look twice.  A rolling McDonald’s??  Then I heard that McDonald’s ran a campaign this year called “Big America” that featured a McDonald’s on wheels.  Only in Japan!  I guess our commercials and ad campaigns look just as strange to them as theirs do to us.  Still it’s a quirky little model that’s detailed but not overly complicated, so why not.  You can grab links to it from Papercraft Paradise.

If you want to see the ad campaign in action, check out the YouTube videos after the jump.

Action Castle

April 5, 2010

Cottage

> You are standing in a small cottage.  There is a fishing pole here.
Exits are: Out

One of the big buzz items from PAX East last weekend was Gabe & Tycho’s impromptu live playing of Action Castle.  Before I even saw the video, I had to order it from Memento Mori.

What is Action Castle?  It’s basically an interactive fiction text adventure game (ala Zork) turned party game.  Called a parsely game,  after the programs that ran the old text adventures, the game consists of one person playing the parser, and the rest playing the player.  As the player, people take turns issuing commands to the parser, who returns a response in the style of the old text parser games.  You lose by dying, or win by meeting the victory conditions of the game.

The physical game comes simply of a double-sided 11″ x 17″ z-folded glossy card, one side consisting of parsely game rules, and the other consisting of the specifics of the game, in this case Action Castle.  See the video from PAX East after the jump.
