Where The Wild Things Are Trailer

March 28, 2009

I’ve been a skeptic of this project since I first heard about it.  I mean, there really isn’t much story in the original book, so what’s been added to stretch it into a movie?  But the trailer does make it look pretty good.

Papercraft Friday #34: VF-1S Valkyrie

March 27, 2009

v03

v02

This week’s model brings back fond memories of watching anime on Saturday mornings at Pantera’s Pizza in the mid-80’s.  It’s the VF-1S Valkyrie from Super Dimensional Fortress Macross (Japan) and Robotech (USA).  The model, from the SF Paper Craft Gallery, comes in two build modes: Fighter mode and Gerwalk mode.  3 model pages each, so not terribly complicated, but nicely detailed.  Good times.

Going to Mars in Name Only

March 23, 2009

rover

This is your chance to go to Mars!

Head over to the Jet Propulsion Laboratory’s Mars Science Laboratory site to have your name included with others on a microchip on the Mars Science Laboratory rover heading to Mars in 2011!  Don’t worry, the Martians won’t have your street address.

Also on their site, you can vote among the 9 finalists to the final name of the new rover.

NintendoPapercraft.com posted a very detailed model of everyone favorite bounty hunter. No, not Boba Fett! I’m talking Samus Aran.

This one’s not for the faint of heart… it’s pretty complicated. But it you are up for the challenge, download the model and instructions here. Thanks to Gollum999 for creating the model, and check out his website of other creations here.

Gooey Butter Cake

March 14, 2009

gooeyYou won’t find me posting much about cooking, because I’m better at eating than at cooking.  And baking…. forget it.  I’ll leave that to Jenny.  But if you’re looking for something delicious, I came across this recipe for Gooey Butter Cake.  Any self-respecting St. Louisan will know exactly what that is, but if you’re not from the area, now you can bake one up yourself.  Enjoy (immensely)!

Papercraft Friday #32: International Space Station (ISS)

March 13, 2009

issWell, I was going to post this model this week because the space shuttle was supposed to launch last Wednesday, carrying the final solar panels to the International Space Station.  That launch was delayed until Sunday (tentatively) because of a leaking hydrogen line.  Then today, the ISS made news because of a near miss with some space debris, that forced the crew to move to the Russian Soyuz lifeboat.

So I guess with all the news, it’s still appropriate to make it this week’s Papercraft Friday model.  Download it here, courtesy of the Double Helix Science Club.  Debris not included.

Game Impressions: Age of Booty

March 12, 2009

Introduction

I am not a fan of real-time strategy (RTS) games.  I can certainly see the appeal.  Maybe they’re intimidating, having to order little little troops hither and yon.  Maybe they give me the impression that in order to be any good at them, you have to invest a considerable amount of time learning all the nuances, and I just don’t want to limit myself to one thing.  So it’s odd, to say the least, to see me giving my game impressions of a RTS game.  I read about Certain Affinity’s downloadable game Age of Booty in a gaming magazine and the concept intrigued me.  I checked out the demo on Xbox Live Arcade, and decided to take the plunge.  So do I now have a Certain Affinity for piratey RTS games?
