I couldn’t help but look at the article on Gizmodo.com entitled Five Questions With Panera Bread iMac Man. I’d seen the story floating around for about a month. The Panera Bread reference in the title caught my eye, as it’s a local success story as a restaurant chain called St. Louis Bread Company that expanded nationally as Panera Bread. Then when I saw the picture, and the guy was playing World of Warcraft, I was hooked. But no one had asked him the burning question: why?
According to this week’s Gizmodo article, James the Panera Bread iMac Man says he goes there to use their internet connection because he doesn’t have one at home. He doesn’t say he can’t get one at home, so you have to wonder. He’s drinking coffee, and I assume he buys something each time he goes. He’s playing an MMO, which has a monthly subscription fee. He has a 20″ iMac, which wasn’t cheap and is fairly heavy (I know, I have one). He has an iLugger bag to carry the iMac around in, which goes for about 80 bucks. But he can’t pay for an internet connection at home??
There has to be more to this story. He can’t physically get internet at his home? He’s desperately trying to avoid his wife? He lives alone and just wants to be around people? We need 5 more questions!!
Or just chalk it up to the fact that people are weird.
I finally saw Avatar last weekend with my brother, and one of the things I kept thinking during the movie was how cool the “helicopters” were. I loved watching the rotors move and rotate. Blogger tekzo at paperhobby created a nice reproduction of the VTOL craft, and made it available for download on his site. Now he just needs to make a Navi warpaint version!

EA has no idea what to do with their intellectual properties. Electronic Arts purchased and subsequently decimated developer Origin Systems Inc, wasting the opportunities it had with all of the IP’s that Origin developed throughout the 80s and early 90s. Then in 2008, EA gives us the awful top-down, 2D space combat game that they slapped the words Wing Commander onto to try to lure old fans of the quality 3D Wing Commander series to purchase it. For shame!
I frequently run across websites that I’d like to share. Some of them I’ve already got in my Blogrolls to the right, and others I just bookmark and revisit. I thought I’d add an infrequent addition to my regular posts called Bookmarked where I’d share a site I recently bookmarked that was interesting, entertaining or useful.
My first entry would be RainyMood.com, a website who’s sole purpose is to play 15 minutes of gentle rain sounds, looped. Great for relaxation or background white noise. This totally falls into the “why didn’t I think of that” category for me.
Our build this week is the LEGO BrickMaster set 20009 AT-TE Walker from Star Wars: The Clone Wars. It’s a 94 piece set that pretty much fits in the palm of your hand (well, if you have a large hand). Consequently it has a lot of small pieces. But for such a small model, it has a lot of moving parts. The legs move, the top cannon swivels and the circular side hatches filp up. Not a bad little set. I’m super jazzed today, as it’s Mass Effect 2 release day! Mass Effect was one of my top games of 2007, and I probably put more than 40 hours into it. Read the novels… check. Played the iPhone / iPod Touch game… check. Read the new comic… check. Pre-ordered the Mass Effect 2 Collector’s Edition… oh yeah! Let the gaming begin!
I finally got around to playing Mass Effect Galaxy. Although it’s been out since June of last year, I never got around to it. But with the imminent release of Mass Effect 2 tomorrow on the PC and Xbox 360, I’ve been immersing myself in all things Mass Effect again, like reading the latest novel, Mass Effect: Ascension, and the new comic Mass Effect: Redemption. So I figured it was time to give Mass Effect Galaxy a shot.
Valve’s Portal was such a goodgame. I was browsing the Case Mod Gallery over at techPowerUp! this weekend, and saw this recent mod by user zAAm. Who doesn’t love their weighted companion cube? *sniff* Brings back memories… You can make one out of paper, or out of gingerbread, or out of computer parts!
